Mastodon Unveil New "Sultan's Curse" Beer

Atlanta titans link with Mikkeller Brewing for limited-edition imperial stout

Do you like beer? Do you like Mastodon? You're in luck: the Atlanta titans have linked up with Denmark's Mikkeller Brewing to unleash "Sultan's Curse" — a limited-edition imperial stout inspired by their latest album, Emperor of Sand, and named after its lead single (streaming above). The brew, which clocks in at a hefty 12% ABV, pays homage to the LP's desert setting by way of a Middle Eastern–inspired flavor profile with hints of dates, cardamom, toasted pistachios and Dark Matter coffee.

Fancy a swig? Better book a ticket to the Golden State, and stat: "Sultan's Curse" is exclusively available in-person at Mikkeller's San Diego taproom and on the microbrewers' webstore, which, sadly, only ships to in-state customers.

"We love collaborating with Mikkeller because we feel like we're cut from the same cloth," drummer Brann Dailor explains. "Mikkeller is always being incredibly creative and pushing the boundaries in the beer world and that's what we try to do with our music."

"Sultan's Curse" is the latest in a long line of badass microbrews rolled out by Mastodon in recent years. Two years ago, the band joined forces with Mikkeller's WarPigs brewpub for a "Mastodon Mother Puncher" farmhouse IPA. Before that, they unveiled an imperial stout, "Crack the Skye," a double black IPA, "Black Tongue," plus a "Mastodon Premium Lager." The Atlantans' beverage-related ambitions don't stop there; the artisanal coffee company Dark Matter released "Black Blood" and "Crack the Skye," two Mastodon-designed blends.
