Brann Dailor couldn't stop drawing clowns. Amid the chaos of the pandemic's spring 2020 chapter — as the world huddled inside, paranoid, scared and uncertain of what was to come — the Mastodon drummer, singer and songwriter started drawing pictures of clowns. So many clowns.
Every day, for 101 days straight, he drew a different clown and texted it to a star-studded mailing list of friends and family members. Some recipients were humored. Others were terrified. Some became worried after he continued to draw elaborate, hysterical, deranged, emotionally piercing clowns at an astonishingly rapid clip — and with no end in sight.
Now Dailor has teamed with Revolver to turn the therapeutic project into his first book, Brann Dailor's 101 Clowns of the Coronavirus. Featuring over 100 pages of original artwork — plus commentary by Sean Ono Lennon, Metallica's Lars Ulrich, Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme, Deftones' Chino Moreno and others who received his artistic dispatches — Brann Dailor's 101 Clowns of the Coronavirus collects all the clowns in a limited-edition 10"x13" hardcover coffee table book, making them available for the viewing pleasure of those outside his tight-knit circle.
"The clowns kept me from spiraling out during all the uncertainty," Dailor says. "They kept me from sinking into a deep depression or experiencing crippling anxiety. The clowns were perfect for that — even the dark ones."
Brann Dailor's 101 Clowns of the Coronavirus is available now exclusively through Revolver's shop. In addition to the book itself, we have numerous bundle options available that come with limited-edition 11x14 screenprints and shirts emblazoned with some of Dailor's finest clown creations.
