See Babymetal Tease Upcoming Graphic Novel in "Metal Resistance Episode VII" Video

'Apocrypha: The Legend of Babymetal' will follow Japanese band's mythic adventures

Babymetal, the cult Japanese "kawaii metal" band moves in mysterious ways. In a recently released video titled "Metal Resistance Episode VII - The Revelation," the group expands on the myth of the "Metal Resistance" (which is also the title of their 2016 album) and teases the imminent arrival of a "new era."

"Light and darkness. Both are considered to be opposites but at the same time, one cannot exist without the other. Until now, we have only experienced the light side — the legend of three metal spirits. An unknown dark side also exists. A legend of seven metal spirits — The Chosen Seven. A new era is about to begin."

While "new era" and "an unknown dark side also exists" could imply there's new music on the horizon, the video is likely related to Apocrypha: The Legend of Babymetal, a just-announced upcoming graphic novel detailing Babymetal's mythic adventures. "Tasked with defeating the forces of darkness and division, the metal spirits must travel through a variety of eras of time, assuming different forms and identities," reads a description posted to the band's website. "What we are seeing is not the Babymetal of the present. It's the original story based on Babymetal you've never heard before. The long-hidden metal spirit's apocrypha of the Metal Resistance will emerge."

The 144-page book — written by a mysterious figure referred to as "The Prophet of the Fox God," with art from GMB Chomichuk — is due out this October. Pre-orders for the standard and special-edition versions (the latter features alternative cover art) will be available on Japanese online store AISMART beginning tomorrow, April 4th, with more pre-order info TBA.

In February, Babymetal announced a summer world tour, which kicks off May 8th in Kansas City, Missouri, and includes a handful of U.S. shows, as well as appearances at major European festivals like Germany's Rock am Ring and England's Download U.K. See their full itinerary here.

The shows will mark the band's first performances since the death of Babymetal's Kami Band guitarist, Mikio Fujioka, who died after falling from an observation deck while stargazing in late December 2017. His replacement has yet to be announced. Babymetal's last full-length album was 2016's Metal Resistance.
