Actor jammed on morose song in his trailer to get into character

In Avengers: Endgame, things get dark for the superhero Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth. Depressed over the loss of his family and friends, the Norse deity lets himself go, gaining weight, drinking heavily and growing out his hair and beard into a tangled mess. As it turns out, Hemsworth turned to some musical inspiration to get him into the grim mood of the part: specifically, Johnny Cash's sparse, melancholic rendition of Nine Inch Nails' landmark song "Hurt."

Appearing on The Tonight Show recently to promote his new movie, Men in Black: International, the actor shared a clip of himself in character as Thor jamming on the despondent tune. "I didn't know if I was ever going to show it," Hemsworth revealed to host Jimmy Fallon. "Because it was in the trailer, in between a few takes."

"It's the saddest song in the world," he added. "And I'm a terrible singer and a terrible guitarist." Watch the clip above — if you don't feel like sitting through all the exposition, you can skip ahead to the 1:44 mark to catch the brief performance.
