Following the news of their ninth Grammy nomination, for their latest hit album Rainier Fog, Seattle grunge forerunners Alice in Chains have announced the forthcoming release of Black Antenna, a 90-minute science-fiction film inspired by the songs on the record. Directed and produced by filmmaker and longtime fan Adam Mason, the movie will roll out over the course of 10 episodes starting in early 2019, with each song correlating to one segment.
"This was an opportunity to do something fresh and inspiring from an indie filmmaking side. The sound and vision between album and film are closely intertwined — it was a brilliant synergy that led to a really unique project," says Mason, who directed the videos for AIC"s "Never Fade" and "The One You Know," seemingly part of this mysterious project.
In the movie's trailer, stylish clips of sharp-dressed characters in sexually charged situations intermingle with an inexplicably space-helmet–wearing civilian wandering a deserted street, a bloody pile of teeth stacks up as a brief flash as a man sticking pliers into his own mouth pops up. The whole teaser is nightmarish, fascinating and sure to grab the eye of attentive fans seeking more visual accompaniment to the band's first album in five years.
Drummer Sean Kinney elaborates on the film's creation, "We've always toyed with the idea of creating videos for every song on one of our albums. Not only did we do that for Rainier Fog, it got totally out of hand and we made a whole goddamn movie. Everything that will be seen in the videos will be footage from Black Antenna to preface the complete film's release."
