See Cyborg Kick Ass to Eerie Linkin Park Cover in 'Alita: Battle Angel' Trailer

"New Divide" receives haunting makeover in teaser for new Robert Rodriguez–directed cyberpunk movie

20th Century Fox have just unveiled a dramatic new trailer for Alita: Battle Angel, its upcoming action film directed by Robert Rodriguez (From Dusk till Dawn, Sin City) and co-produced by James Cameron of Titanic and Avatar fame. The two-and-a-half-minute teaser prominently features a moody, stripped-down take on Linkin Park's "New Divide" by J2, a composer and erstwhile Shakira collaborator; the haunting vocals are courtesy of indie singer Avery.

Linkin Park's 2009 single got its start in the movies — as it was first recorded specifically for Michael Bay's film Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Adapted from the Yukito Kishiro manga "Gunnm," Alita: Battle Angel tells the story of Alita (voiced by Rosa Salazar), a seemingly abandoned cyborg with a bad case of amnesia living in a cyberpunk dystopia. When an errant doctor (played by Christoph Waltz) discovers she still possesses a heart and soul (a technological marvel unseen for the centuries) she becomes a target for the city's corrupt government — and, thanks to her ungodly powers, an unlikely savior. The cast is rounded out by a host of action vets, including Jennifer Connelly (Hulk), Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen), Eiza Gonzalez (Baby Driver), Lana Condor (X-Men: Apocalypse), and Ed Skrein (Deadpool), among others.

Catch Alita: Battle Angel in theaters on December 21st.
