See Drug-Fueled, Demonic Dance Party Unfold in New Trailer for Gaspar Noé's 'Climax'

Upcoming horror film described as "Satanic 'Step Up'" arrives later this year

French filmmaker Gaspar Noé — best known as the man behind outré art-house hits like Enter the Void and Love — is gearing up to unleash his latest horrorshow Climax, a sure-to-be disturbing new film that production studio A24 intriguingly described in a press release as a "Satanic Step Up" (per Bloody Disgusting).

The newly-revealed trailer for Climax, which follows its Cannes Film Festival premiere earlier this year, fully justifies that title. Less a movie preview than an expertly choreographed, sangria-drenched, hallucinogenic romp through literal boogie hell, it teases the tale of a dance group whose midwinter rehearsal devolves into, well, an expertly-choreographed, sangria-drenched, hallucinogenic romp through literal boogie hell. Although Satan doesn't make a physical appearance, he's undoubtedly present in spirit: After all, a maddening party like this couldn't happen without a little extra help.

Judging by the early reviews of Climax, audiences are in for one brutal bacchanal, as Slashfilm points out. "There's nonstop screaming, vicious beatings, self-harm, sexual assaults, incest, one girl's hair goes up in flames, and another recreates Isabelle Adjani's Possession freak-out to the tune of Aphex Twin's 'Windowlicker,'" writes The Film Stage's Giovanni Camia. "It's all insane and intoxicating, and what's perhaps most remarkable is that, ultimately, the ugliness and excess is legitimized by being in the service of an elaborate and ecstatically realized celebration of dancing as an art form."

Gaspar Noé's Climax is due out sometime this year, with an exact release date TBA. Check out its crazy poster below.
