Metallica frontman plays highway trooper who arrested Bundy in serial killer biopic

The highly anticipated movie Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, starring Zac Efron as notorious Seventies serial killer Ted Bundy, recently made its world premiere, at the heralded Sundance film festival in Park City, Utah. In addition to Efron, the biopic also features Metallica frontman James Hetfield, who, in his acting debut, plays the role of Bob Hayward, the real-life Utah highway trooper who first arrested Bundy in 1975. Extremely Wicked was directed by Joe Berlinger, who also co-directed the milestone rock doc Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, and his experiences with Hetfield while making that film inspired the casting.

"Having spent hundreds of hours behind the scenes with James and the rest of Metallica, I have experienced his charisma and powerful presence close up," the director told Deadline. "It seemed only natural that he would bring that same power and magnetism to a dramatic role, so when he agreed to my pitch that he be in the movie, I was thrilled."

You can see Papa Het in action as Hayward in the newly released trailer for Extremely Wicked, which includes scenes of Hetfield's highway trooper pulling over Efron's Bundy and staring him down in an interrogation room. No theatrical release date has been scheduled for the film as of yet.
