Journalist and metal vocalist Danica Roem made political history last month by defeating Republican incumbent Bob Marshall to claim a seat in the Virginia's House of Delegates, making her the first openly transgender legislator in the state's 230-year history. With her swearing-in just over a month away, Roem stopped by Comedy Central's The Opposition Report With Jordan Klepper to discuss the monumental win, her legislative agenda and, of course, heavy metal.

"It doesn't matter what you look like, where you come from, how you worship, who you love, or — yeah — how you rock," Roem said of her platform with a smile. Pressed by Klepper for more details regarding said rocking, the Cab Ride Home singer said she was a fan of "old-school thrash metal." Klepper, in turn, asked if there was such a thing as "new-school thrash metal," prompting a brief crash course in the genre from the delegate-to-be — plus a shout-out to fellow Virginians Municipal Waste: "The noise kind of had to go really underground for a while for a bit, but Municipal Waste brought it back," Roem explained. Watch the whole interview below.

Want more Virginia thrash? Below, watch Iron Reagan (fronted by none other than Municipal Waste's Tony Foresta) play a rowdy house party for the ages in their video for "Bleed the Fifth," off this year's album Crossover Ministry.
