See Terrifying Trailer for New Horror Film 'Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark'

Master of surreal terror Guillermo Del Toro brings nightmare-inducing children's book series to life

From producer Guillermo Del Toro and director André Øvredal comes a chilling look inside the horrors of kids' imaginations: Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, the filmmakers' new movie based on the best-selling book series of the same name.

Published between 1981 and 1991, the children's horror novels having been scarring youngsters for over 30 years particularly with their blurry gray-toned illustrations. The movie promises to induce nightmares in young and old alike, via hair-raising scenes featuring slow-moving corpses hellbent on evil and bloated, menacing scarecrows come to life to haunt the onscreen characters who've dared to read their stories.

"You don't read the books," claims one of the protagonists, a tear-stricken teen. "The book reads you." Kids are yanked into never-ending tunnels under beds, tortured by approaching monsters in school hallways, and trapped in cages while distorted, nauseating figures crawl on all fours toward them. Flashes of police cars sliding on rainy streets and a sole crying adult on the end of a bad phone call add a deeper level of anxiety, as even the people the children are meant to trust can't help them escape this hell now.

The climatic scene comes when a prim young woman dressed head-to-toe in pink and white stripes appears with a boil on her cheek in a mirror, obviously fearful of the ghastly ailment. As the zit starts to visibly grow larger by the second, she shrieks and a tiny hair pops out, a screeching sound coming from inside her own face as she probes to find its source.

The film is set to hit theaters this summer on August 9th. Check out the official website for more information on casting and to see stills from the movie.
