Stan Lee, Marvel comics writer, editor and publisher, died on Monday, November 12th, at the age of 95. Lee was admitted to Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on Monday after suffering a medical emergency, and was pronounced dead shortly after. Lee's daughter confirmed his death to Variety.

Working with artists including Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Gene Colan, John Romita and Don Heck, Lee introduced the world to characters that would become pop-culture staples to this day, including the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, the X-Men, Iron Man, Thor and many more. Lee and Marvel's approach to creating these characters — instilling them with human doubts and insecurities — set a new standard for the medium. Lee was also instrumental in creating interlocking story lines, which eventually gave rise to the Marvel Universe where characters would regularly appear in each other's stories.

Throughout his life, Lee was a tireless promoter for his Marvel creations, comic books in general, and at times, himself, making gleeful and off-beat cameos in nearly every Marvel-based movie.

Actors and musicians took to social media with tributes and remembrances, including Robert Downey Jr. who posted "I owe it all to you... Rest in Peace Stan."

"We've lost a creative genius," Hugh Jackman wrote. "Stan Lee was a pioneering force in the superhero universe. I'm proud to have been a small part of his legacy and .... to have helped bring one of his characters to life."

"Only got to meet Stan 'the man' Lee once but it was a fucking thrill," wrote Rob Zombie. "Marvel comics was one of the best things I remember about being a kid. Thanks for everything. What would we have done without you?"

Kirk Hammett posted the following on Twitter: "Stan Lee was a visionary and a pioneer. I owe a lot to him for personally shaping my childhood fantasy worlds, my appreciation for art on all levels, & for teaching me humanness and humility through his wonderfully insightful stories. He will be missed. Long Live FOOM !"
