'Star Wars Episode IX': Watch Stunning First Trailer Starring New Droid Dio

Action-packed 'The Rise of Skywalker' teaser also features emotional scene with late Carrie Fisher

The conclusion of Star Wars' "Skywalker Saga" has been looming on the horizon since the sequel trilogy began in 2015, and today the teaser trailer for Episode IX has been revealed. It's titled The Rise of Skywalker, and seems to pick up a little later from where The Last Jedi left off. The teaser opens on a shot of Rey in the middle of some kind of desert, while some First Order ship charges after her. Hard to tell whether or not Kylo Ren is piloting the ship, but when it gets on her tail she does a kind of Matrix-style back flip, putting her light saber into the ship. From there, we're given a quick pan of events that will take place, including a multitude of new planets, Billy Dee Williams back as Lando Calrissian, Kylo giving some schmuck the Rock Bottom, a very emotional shot of Carrie Fisher as Leia, and more. It all ends with the sound of Emperor Palpatine cackling, as the title card reveals in full.

A fun aside for metal fans, at Star Wars Celebration Chicago, director JJ Abrams and the rest of the cast introduced fans to a new droid named Dio (see below). It's not confirmed whether or not metal legend Ronnie James Dio inspired the new creation, but we sure hope so. Stay tuned for updates.

Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20th.
