Between the ridiculous gore and esoteric profanity, Deadpool 2 is not exactly what you'd consider a family friendly film. (Not that it mattered. Despite its R-rating, it was the sixth-highest grossing movie of 2018.) Still, Fox is going back to the well next month with a recut, re-edited distillation of Deadpool 2 called Once Upon a Deadpool, which carries a far more palatable PG-13 designation. You can watch the trailer for that version above.
Deadpool has an eccentric relationship with the fourth wall, and creatively, that means Once Upon a Deadpool is framed with a strange, Princess Bride-like send-up. As you can see in the trailer, Deadpool recaps the events of the film to a dewy-eyed Fred Savage (of The Wonder Years fame) — hilariously parodying his childhood role in The Princess Bride— while leaving out some of the nard-slicing that earned the movie its original rating. So, for superfans, you can go into Once Upon a Deadpool with the expectation of new content and new jokes, while also knowing that your nine-year old won't be scarred for life. The movie gets a limited theatrical run starting on December 12th.
