Watch Sean Penn, Lars Ulrich Discuss Politics, Weathering Media Backlash

Plus, actor details decades-in-the-making novel 'Bob Honey, Who Just Do Stuff'

Actor Sean Penn was the guest on Lars Ulrich's Beats 1 show "It's Electric!" this weekend. The first half of their two-part interview, which aired yesterday (May 20th), detailed Penn's decades-in-the-making novel Bob Honey, Who Just Do Stuff, released this March; his tumultuous relationship with the media; his approach to the writing process and more.

Video clips taken from the new episode find Penn looking back his controversial 2002 open letter lambasting President George W. Bush's aggressive foreign policy in Iraq — which the author wrote following an eye-opening trip to the country's war-torn capital of Baghdad — as well as the fallout following its publication in the Washington Post. ("I thought I was going to go out on the street, in Memphis, Tennessee, and get shot — which is where I had flown to directly from Iraq," Penn says.) The actor also chatted about his memoir-writing experiences, and the importance of staying true to memory. Check the videos out above and below.

Part two of Ulrich's "It's Electric!" interview with Penn premieres this Sunday, May 27th. "It's Electric!" airs every Sunday at 6 p.m. EST on Apple Music.
