Here at Revolver, we're always on the hunt for new songs to bang our heads to — indeed, it's a big part of our jobs. With that in mind, here are the tracks released this week in metal, hard rock and hardcore that have been on heavy rotation at Revolver HQ. Marilyn Manson - "God's Gonna Cut You Down"
Marilyn Manson appears to have begun the unveiling process of his new collection of Southern-fried outlaw country songs, starting with a fantastic rendition of folk standard "God's Gonna Cut You Down." In a long career built on snarling transgression, Manson's most surprising move might be the one where he takes on this new cowboy persona, and does so with grace, passion and a talent few were likely expecting.
Take Offense - "Internalized"
Hardcore upstarts Take Offense created something intensely fresh with "Internalized," a bombastic track that harkens back to early Rollins Band or Suicidal Tendencies classics, but with a smooth, charismatic edge that sounds almost pop-like at certain points. A must-hear for those who's ever felt a split alliance to the worlds of punk and metal.
Greet Death - "You're Gonna Hate What You've Done"
If you love Nineties alt rockers and shoegazers at their most melancholy and romantic best, there's something comforting for you to find in Greet Death's "You're Gonna Hate What You've Done." A touching, hypnotic weeper, the song and its gorgeously simple video touch on a feeling of youthful longing that sticks around long after those years have passed. It's brilliant to capture, painful to remember and stunning to hear rendered in song form so perfectly.
Lindemann - "Ich weiß es nicht"
The dynamic pairing of Rammstein's Till Lindemann and Hypocrisy's Peter Tägtgren shows its powerful self once more on the aggressively catchy "Icch weiß es nicht" (that's "I Don't Know" in English), a dark dance extravaganza that utilizes an eerie choral background to show off the former's smooth roar while the latter's instrumention gallops beneath. It promises great things for the duo's upcoming album F & M, for fans of both men's solo and combined work.
Frail Body - "Your Death Makes Me Wish Heaven Was Real"
There's not much editorializing to be done with screamo crew Frail Body's "Your Death Makes Me Wish Heaven Was Real" that can't be gleamed from the heart-wrenching title. Luckily for those attempting to avoid crying while listening today, the lyrics are obscured in pained shrieks that convey enough emotion without a lyric sheet. For the self-flagellating curious, though, "It never occurred/That I would have to search/For your comfort between branches and leaves" sums up the despair contained within.
Battles - "Fort Greene Park"
Instrumental math-rock duo Battles always manage to have fun while creating something wholly unique and true to their unmistakable sound, and "Fort Greene Park" is no exception to that infectious rule. Former Helmet and Tomahawk drummer John Stanier's reputation for being a human metronome is underlined yet again on the group's bright exploration of texture, syncopation and off-kilter experimentation.
