Here at Revolver, we're always on the hunt for new songs to bang our heads to — indeed, it's a big part of our jobs. With that in mind, here are the tracks released this week in metal, hard rock and hardcore that have been on heavy rotation at Revolver HQ. For your listening pleasure, we've also compiled the songs in a Spotify playlist, which will grow each week.
Fit for a King - "Breaking the Mirror"
According to Fit for a King vocalist Ryan Kirby, the Dallas metalcore stalwarts' new single "Breaking the Mirror" is "not just about leaving your troubled past behind, but destroying it." Majestic and punishing, the compulsive anthem sounds hellbent on such positive destruction, winding as it does from roaring verses to a clean pop-inflected chorus to a massive, exultant breakdown.
The Black Dahlia Murder - "Child of Night"
When it comes to delivering blistering, bilious death metal that's equal parts fun and furious, few do it as well as Michigan's the Black Dahlia Murder. The second single off their forthcoming Verminous LP showcases this double-edged skill with aplomb, as vocalist Trevor Strnad shrieks, snarls and growls over goat-throwing shred, making for a ripper as well suit to hard-partying debauchery as it is to a gruesome occult sacrifice.
Code Orange - "Sulfur Surrounding"
As bandleader Jami Morgan told us when we recently visited the band at home in Pittsburgh, Code Orange are out to make heavy music "new and exciting," and their stunning new LP, Underneath, does just that. Devastatingly heavy, disorientatingly chaotic yet hooky as all hell, the album is punctuated by standout cut "Sulfur Surrounding," a cinematic dirge that showcases the trailblazing band's ever-evolving range.
Warbringer - "The Black Hand Reaches Out"
Warbringer vocalist John Kevill describes the thrash true believers' mosh-ready new single as well as we ever could: It's "a mid-tempo stomper with a sneaky, clandestine feel." A fitting sound for a song about the Serbian paramilitary nationalist group The Black Hand, which was behind one of the most consequential terrorist attack of all time.
Eye Flys - "Guillotine"
Eye Flys may feature Full of Hell guitarist Spencer Hazard, but don't expect hyperspeed industrialized grindcore from this crew. Instead, look to the band's name — a nod to the Melvins — for insight into their direction. "Guillotine" is a gnarled noise-rock face-basher worthy of King Buzzo, as well as feedback-worshipping bluesmen Unsane. Its politically charged lyrics, which rail against economic inequality run amuck, only add heft to its impact.
EU1OGY - WAGON V. 2
Count Baltimore's EU1OGY among the insurgent generation of artists actively erasing the lines between metal, hardcore, rap and electronic music. Drawing from influences ranging from Travis Scott to Bring Me the Horizon, his bass-heavy new single "WAGON V. 2" rumbles and roars like Ho99o9 at their subterranean best, all while extolling listeners to face the "realest version" of themselves and embrace it.
