Here at Revolver, we're always on the hunt for new songs to bang our heads to — indeed, it's a big part of our jobs. With that in mind, here are the tracks released this week in metal, hard rock and hardcore that have been on heavy rotation at Revolver HQ. For your listening pleasure, we've also compiled the songs in a Spotify playlist below, which will grow each week.
VR Sex - "Sacred Limousine"
Noel Skum (a.k.a. Andrew Clinco of Drab Majesty) channels heavy Ian Curtis / Joy Division vibes on "Sacred Limousine," the first single from debut full-length Human Traffic Jam. While Drab Majesty may be dark and forlorn, VR Sex is propulsive, revealing a whole different approach for the L.A.-based musician, while still staying within the shadowy world of influences like early Cure and other fuel-injected goth and dark wave. And not unlike most Drab offerings, "Sacred Limousine" is slinky, sexy and oh-so badass.
Rammstein - "Radio"
Rammstein are digging deep into their techno influences for the absolute banger that is "Radio," the new cut from their forthcoming full-length. Serving similar vibes as their debut album's unforgettable track "Du Reicht So Gut," the latest from the German masters of industrial perfection is more pop-oriented than the massive lead single "Deutschland" — hinting that the coming album will be a dynamic trek through their experimental efforts while still giving fans what they love: anthemic, indisputably dance-oriented songs that are as heavy as they are "Radio"-friendly.
Darkthrone - "The Hardship of the Scots"
A lot of kvlt purists bemoan the fact that Darkthrone's later work has strayed away from their trve black-metal roots. Fuck those fools! The Norwegian duo's latest track "The Hardship of the Scots" rules because of Darkthrone's ability to draw from influences as wide as Celtic Frost and AC/DC and create a superbly fun and killer song that merges straight-up rock elements and somber, heavy detours. It's a metal-as-hell cut, and you can tell Fenriz and Culto had a blast making it.
Rico Nasty - "Cold"
Slipknot-loving trap artist Rico Nasty turned heads last year when she dropped the hard-as-hell song and video for "Rage," which combined chugging nu-metal guitars and throat-shredding screams. The Maryland rapper is still going for the jugular, as heard on "Cold," the lead track from her new record Anger Management. The seething cut, which is another collaboration with DJ/producer Kenny Beats, is set to an infectious, gut-rumbling bass line and fattened up with background shouts to support Nasty's whip-smart and lightning-fast stream of visceral rage.
Superstition - "Highly Attuned Beasts of the Dark"
Let heavy metal be heavy, right? Superstition is one of the evilest sounding death-metal bands currently working their way up the ranks, and "Highly Attuned Beasts of the Dark" is scary heavy. The entire song sounds like a full-on charge to hell as the band unleashes technical flourishes over some pretty wild riffing. It's crazy how vast of an experience Superstition manage to create in the span of just four minutes. Sick band, sick song.
3Teeth - "EXXXIT"
3Teeth can't stop ratcheting up the sexual intensity, teasing the listener with sensually whispered verses before exploding into powerfully controlled choruses that play out like an ecstatic slow-build release at the hands of a patient, experienced master. Their latest single "EXXXIT" — which arrived with an appropriately NSFW video — is another hypnotic burner rooted in industrial heft with explorative forays into nightmarish synth lines that twist the brain into a state of unconscious surrender before bringing you back into the present with hard-stomping refrains. This one's sure to be a dark-horse crowd favorite on their upcoming tours with the likes of Ministry and Author & Punisher.
