Here at Revolver, we're always on the hunt for new songs to bang our heads to — indeed, it's a big part of our jobs. With that in mind, here are the tracks released this week in metal, hard rock and hardcore that have been on heavy rotation at Revolver HQ. For your listening pleasure, we've also compiled the songs in a Spotify playlist below, which will grow each week.
Gatecreeper - "Anxiety"
Arizona death-metal upstarts Gatecreeper have been tucked away in GodCity Studio with producer Kurt Ballou working on the full-length follow-up to their killer 2016 debut Sonoran Depravation. Today, they dropped the first taste of new material with "Anxiety," the title of which reflects the "stress and mental torment" singer Chase Mason experienced from writing the record. And if the track is any indication of what we can expect from the as-yet-untitled new album, then Gatecreeper are primed to annihilate us ... and we cannot wait.
Nastie Band - "Shapeshift"
Nastie Band is an unholy art-doom collective featuring Faith No More synthman Roddy Bottum, twin brothers David and Tradd Sanderson, visual artist Frank Haines (credited as Sandy Smiles) and 81-year-old singer Chris Kachulis just to name a few. Their debut single "Shapeshift" — which arrived along with 10 remixes — is one of the most dirgeful, hope-breaking things we've heard this year.
Street Sects - "Goodbye Recidivist Road"
Austin industrial-punk duo Streets Sects' "Goodbye Recidivist Road" (the latest installment in their Gentrification series) is a brutal exploration of "characters whose lives are maligned by alienation, exile and economic peril." Fittingly, they package their bleak lyrical concepts in a vicious mix of scorched vocals, stomping propulsive rhythms and furious mechanical squeals and screeches. A true build-and-destroy banger.
Pallbearer - "Atlantis"
Arkansas doomsayers Pallbearer continue their run as one of today's brightest torchbearers of dope-smoking riffage with their latest single "Atlantis," which bursts with all the guitar-hero theatrics you've come to expect from the Little Rock band. A perfect soundtrack to light up, kick back and trip out on visions of an ancient mythical city violently sinking into the sea ...
Scarlxrd - "GXING THE DISTANCE"
Scarlxrd is one of the many dudes on the scene working an unusual blend of Slipknot-style ripcord metal and, like, Atlanta trap. But the rapper has the benefit of being from England, and on "GXING THE DISTANCE" his nasty British sneer elevates his shit-talking verses to a whole new level.
Clutch - "Evil - The Weathermaker Vault Series"
Clutch's "Evil" aims to be one of the last things you hear before you die. "Grab your telephone, something ain't right, something evil is going on," warns singer Neil Fallon in his trademark backwoods growl over some crunchy work on the high frets. Another welcomed, groove-heavy entry in the long-running band's formidable riff-filled catalog.
