Dying Wish - "Fragments of a Bitter Memory"
When you're backed by scene leaders and mosh-pit kings Knocked Loose before you've even released your first full-length, you know you're onto something — and that something is heavy as fuck. On the lead single and title track off their upcoming debut LP, Portland's Dying Wish deliver on that promise with a cranium-crushing metalcore banger that's as weighty thematically as it sonically.
Spirit Adrift - "Forge Your Future"
Giving up his spot in death dealers Gatecreeper to focus on his trad-metal outfit Spirit Adrift has served singer-guitarist Nate Garrett well, at least judging from the latter band's latest offering. An epic, Eighties-style anthem, the inspirational "Forge Your Future" truly channels "the life-affirming power of metal," as Garrett has described Spirit Adrift's mission.
Times of Grace - "Rescue"
For Killswitch Engage fans who've found Times of Grace's previous two singles either too mellow or too down tempo, Jesse Leach and Adam D have an answer: "Rescue." It may be a love song, but it's also one of the hardest-hitting and most metalcore-leaning cuts off the Killswitch side project's Songs of Loss and Separation, their first album in 10 long years.
Ingrown - "Waste"
Brutal, burly and to the point, Ingrown play no-nonsense hardcore with attitude to spare. Their new sub-two-minute rager "Waste" is perfectly complemented with a homegrown music video full of guns, flags and dirt bikes that almost makes living in Boise, Idaho, look like fun.
Ministry - "Good Trouble"
Inspired by the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests and the activism of late Congressman John Lewis, Ministry's menacing new single is classic Uncle Al fare: propelled by driving riffs, mechanical drums, seething vocals (and wailing harmonica) and some choice cut-n-paste samples. Good trouble, indeed.
Trivium - "In the Court of the Dragon"
Born amid the stress and isolation of pandemic quarantine, Trivium's new single, "In the Court of the Dragon," leans into the Floridian metal stalwarts' heaviest, thrashiest inclinations, an exorcism of built-up energy. Even better, it boasts an epic intro from Emperor frontman Ihsahn.
