Here at Revolver, we're always on the hunt for new songs to bang our heads to — indeed, it's a big part of our jobs. With that in mind, here are the tracks released this week in metal, hard rock and hardcore that have been on heavy rotation at Revolver HQ. For your listening pleasure, we've also compiled the songs in a Spotify playlist, which will grow each week.
Loathe - "Gored"
Self-described "experimental metal" outfit Loathe make a strong case for being the U.K.'s answer to Code Orange with "Gored," which, like the aforementioned Pittsburgh heavy-music stars' output, defies easy categorization, incorporating electronic/industrial textures and nontraditional structures into their knotty, gnarled mix of hardcore, djent and Slipknotian percussive overload.
Orbit Culture - "Nensha"
Orbit Culture may hail from Sweden and make death metal, but they don't fall into either the Gothenburg or Stockholm camps of Swedish death. Instead, on epic new single "Nensha," they conjure cataclysmic heaviness and all-consuming atmospherics more reminiscent of Poland's Behemoth and France's Gojira. Which puts them in fine company, indeed.
The Number Twelve Looks Like You - "Of Fear"
Back from the dead since 2016, spazzy, soaring Jersey progcore veterans the Number Twelve Looks Like You dropped their first new album in a decade, Wild Gods, today (September 20th) and this standout cut, which features guest vocals by Rolo Tomassi's always electric singer Eva Spence, offers up the kitchen sink and more. A ferocious beatdown that culminates in beautiful swells and melodic coos, it leaves a serious mark.
Frail Body "Pastel"
Illinois trio Frail Body recently signed to Deathwish Inc., and the lead cut off their forthcoming debut LP for the label, A Brief Memoriam, more than lives up to the hardcore/punk stronghold's high standards. A torrential blur of emotive vocals and hyperspeed riffing and drumming, the song is vivid and overwhelming, anything but pastel.
Plague Years - "Hellborn"
While we all eagerly await a new Power Trip album, at least we have Plague Years. The Detroit thrashers' just-released EP, Unholy Infestation, rips hard, and "Hellborn," its galloping third track, is a compulsive death charge right into the fiery mouth of Hades. Just try not to bang your head. We dare you.
Green Druid - "The End of Men"
Colorado's Green Druid were previously probably best known for making metal-blog headlines with their so-called "Weed Olympics" in which they smoke-tested 16 strains against each other. Now, these devoted dragonauts have channeled their undying love of the sweet leaf into eight-and-a-half glorious minutes of Sleep-worshipping stoner doom. Inhale deeply.
