Here at Revolver, we're always on the hunt for great new music — indeed, it's a big part of our jobs. With that in mind, here are the tracks released this week in metal, hard rock and hardcore that have been on heavy rotation at Revolver HQ. For your listening pleasure, we've also compiled the songs in a Spotify playlist, which will grow each week.
Turnstile - "Generator"
A punchy new single from Turnstile's just-announced Roadrunner debut Time & Space, "Generator" kicks the Baltimoreans' pit-starting sass up a few notches, pitting frontman Brendan Yates' defiant yelps with bemused, melodic "mm-hmms" and catchy, flange-soaked guitar riffs. In short, this song rips.
Watain - "Sacred Damnation"
Don't let their penchant for spraying warm, porcine bodily fluids on paying audiences fool you: the black-metal legion Watain have always been cosmic poets first, troublemakers second. "Sacred Damnation," the latest single off the Swedes' upcoming album Trident Wolf Eclipse, looses some of group's most hauntingly beautiful imagery to date — hissing wounds, leprous smiles, sulfurous scents, and acts of violence "plumed" in brimstone — against a foreboding, tremulous backdrop.
The Atlas Moth - "Coma Noir"
Like the moribund style of cinema referenced in its title, "Coma Noir" — the title track off the Atlas Moth's upcoming record, due out early next year — represents a collective product of intrigue, a vessel fine-crafted to seduce and disturb. Once again, the Chicago experimentalists derive most of their labyrinthine energies from the explosive interplay between dulcet-voiced David Kush and his hard-as-nails compatriot Stavros Giannopoulos, whose screams could easily move mountains.
Suburbanite - "Warhawk"
War ... war never changes. Neither does the reliability of the New York City hardcore scene, which spawned Suburbanite — a new outfit featuring current and former members of Gotham wrecking crews like Warthog, Absolute Power, Failures, and others — last year. That the band's pulverizing, pogo-ing take on punk is frequently referred to as "bruiser beat" is a bit of a red herring: its white-hot riffage aside, "Warhawk" is a fun, unfussed call-and-response ditty that, while written in 2017, wouldn't sound out of place on an old Necros LP. Bombs away!
Rolo Tomassi - "Balancing The Dark"
British math-rockers Rolo Tomassi were once described as "a polished chrome King Crimson for the 21st Century," the prog-metal equivalent of a dirty bomb. On their new song "Balancing the Dark," Eva Spence et al steer their white-knuckled grooves into a foreboding ambient gyre which deals its killing blow when you least expect it. Don't worry, though — destruction may come swiftly, but boy, is it is sweet.
Vilkacis - "Sixty Three"
Taken from the Latvian word for "werewolf," Vilkacis is the artistic endeavor of M. Rekevics, a bonafide one-man black-metal machine masquerading as a guy from Brooklyn. Three years after 2014's magnificent debut The Fever of War, the wolf man cometh back, just in time; clocking in at nearly 6 spectacularly suffocating minutes, "Sixty Three," the first single from Vilkacis' upcoming sophomore album Beyond the Mortal Gate, is one blackened epic you won't want to miss.
