Mastodon, Dead Heat, Militarie Gun and more
mastodon 2020 PRESS

Here at Revolver, we're always on the hunt for new songs to bang our heads to — indeed, it's a big part of our jobs. With that in mind, here are the tracks released this week in metal, hardcore, darkwave and more that have been on heavy rotation at Revolver HQ. For your listening pleasure, we've also compiled the songs in an ever-evolving Spotify playlist.

Mastodon - "Forged by Neron"
There's nothing that hits quite like a raging Mastodon song. "Forged by Neron" is the band's contribution to the badass soundtrack for the Dark Nights: Death Metal comic books series, and it sees the band in wheel-screeching go-mode — tsunami riffs, crashing drums and a face-melting solo.

Born of Osiris - "Angel or Alien"
The Born of Osiris djentlemen continue to refine their crisp, catchy, even beautiful sound on their latest dose of bouncy progcore. "Angel or Alien" is an emotional breakup song at its heart, but the beaming synth melody and triumphant shredding brings to mind the unexpected serenity that glimmers in the aftermath a brutal storm.

Militarie Gun - "Don't Pick Up the Phone"
In his new band with members of Drug Church and Modern Color, Regional Justice Center mastermind Ian Shelton trades blistering powerviolence for a style of prickly indie-pop with a bitter, post-hardcore finish. "Don't Pick Up the Phone" is the first single from their new EP, All Roads Lead to Gun, and it's a paranoid little jaunt that places Shelton's raspy yelps above gently swaying instrumentation.

K.K.'s Priest - "Hellfire Thunderbolt"
The first single from K.K.'s Priest — the new band helmed by Judas Priest's founding guitarist K.K. Downing and ex-singer Tim "Ripper" Owens" — sounds like the power-metal veterans have something to prove. "Hellfire Thunderbolt" is an excellent demonstration of classic metal riffage, sky-high vocals and legitimately impressive guitarwork.

Dead Heat - "World at War"
California's Dead Heat specialize in crossover hardcore that will surely appeal to fans of Power Trip, Municipal Waste and their former split-mates Mindforce. The title track from their forthcoming sophomore album (out June 4th via Triple B Records) begins as a circle pit soundtrack, but things slow down in the second half for a pile-driving gang-vocal chant that's built for testing the strength of stages worldwide.

Go Ahead and Die - "Roadkill"
The Cavalera family doesn't miss. The sludgy third single from Go Ahead and Die — the family band of Max Cavalera and his son Igor Amadeus plus Khemmis' Zach Coleman — is less of a death-metal gallop compared to the other two, but it's still a downright bruiser that's as mean and ugly as anything the elder Cavalera has ever created.

Gost - "Coven"
On his latest offering of ghastly synthwave, GosT strikes a delicate balance between gothic beauty and shrieking heaviness. After settling into a propulsive beat and a muttery vocal delivery, "Coven" launches into black metal screeches that boil over into a chuggy, intense climax.
