Here at Revolver, we're always on the hunt for new songs to bang our heads to — indeed, it's a big part of our jobs. With that in mind, here are the tracks released this week in deathcore, prog, black-metal and more that have been on heavy rotation at Revolver HQ. For your listening pleasure, we've also compiled the songs in an ever-evolving Spotify playlist.
Thrice - "Scavengers"
There aren't many post-hardcore bands who've aged as gracefully as Thrice. The O.C. vets have evolved considerably since they helped pioneer mall emo nearly two decades back, and their new single, "Scavengers," highlights their tasteful maturation — dynamic songwriting, a gorgeous refrain, masterful self-production — while still keeping the fiery energy burning under the hood.
Coheed and Cambria - "Shoulders"
The new Coheed and Cambria song is total ball. The prog heroes dial into a fat, funky guitar riff and a thrusting rhythm while Claudio Sanchez wails atop it all with a giddy charisma. Unlike most Coheed tracks, "Shoulders" foregoes the heady sci-fi concept for personal meditations on the arduous and draining sides of the band life. Even if they aren't usually your bag, give this one a go.
Carnifex - "Graveside Confessions"
Carnifex have already dropped three increasingly monstrous songs this year, but the Cali group are on a successful mission to outdo themselves. "Graveside Confessions," the title track from their upcoming album, is the deathcore equivalent of a tree being uprooted during a hurricane — a terrifyingly heavy spectacle that boasts yet another stellar vocal performance from Scott Lewis.
If I Die First - "Walking a Razor's Edge"
We hopped on the If I Die First train earlier this year when the post-hardcore upstarts joined forces with SeeYouSpaceCowboy for their excellent split, A Sure Disaster. Now, the supergroup featuring Lil Lotus and members of From First to Last have followed it up with another new banger called "Walking a Razor's Edge," which also features SYSC frontwoman Connie Sgarbossa. If its Myspace-era cover cover art awakens something in you, then this is a must-hear.
Annihilus - "The Voice of Shai-Hulud"
"The Voice of Shai-Hulud" is the second Annihilus single we've heard from their upcoming record on Greg Puciato's Federal Prisoner label, and it's quite different than the first. Compared to the hardcore ferocity of "Draw the Beast," this one sees the one-man Chicago project swap punk for sludge and then slather it with sheets of noisy, abrasive black-metal textures. It's sick as hell.
Bullet for My Valentine - "Parasite"
Bullet for My Valentine are on a warpath, and we're here for it. "Parasite" is the second of two shockingly heavy singles from the U.K. metal act that feature them abandoning all remnants of nu and trad metal in favor of balls-to-the-walls metalcore fury. Bands are often talking out of their asses when they boast that their new album is their heaviest yet, but for BFMV, that genuinely seems to be the case.
Zeal & Ardor - "Erase"
Back in May, Zeal & Ardor released an unexpectedly pounding new song called "Run," and now the project of Manuel Gagneux is back with another stomper. "Erase" includes plenty of dusky clean vocals and a couple whispery bridges, but the bulk of the track revolves around a chugging breakdown with a distressing guitar lick that brings to mind bands like Trivium and Chimaira.
Cane Hill - "All We Know"
Cane Hill continue to sit atop the throne of earworm metalcore songwriting. On their new one-off single, "All We Know", the NOLA gang make efficient use of every inch of a wiggly djent groove to prop up a soulful chorus, a sinewy guitar solo, catchy screams and more. The band made clear that it's not appearing on their upcoming EP, which is honestly a flex in and of itself. If this is a leftover ingredient then we can't wait for the main dish.
