Angel, Salesman, Sleazeball: See Fury's Offbeat New "Angels Over Berlin" Video

California post-hardcore group's new clip is homage to directors Jim Jarmusch, Wim Wenders

California's Fury know their way around a post-hardcore groove, lighting up headphones with their Quicksand meets Supertouch-isms on their latest offering Failed Entertainment. The album opener "Angels over Berlin" sets the tone for the proceedings, with a singular guitar riffing to an almost funky sway, leading the way for a solid listen throughout the rest of the very well-crafted effort. Now the album opener gets a video treatment courtesy of director Mario Escoto, who leans into 16mm film for their new visual which makes it's debut here at Revolver today (June 5th).

"With the support of a label that can afford us the opportunity, we jumped at the idea of making a music video on film," explains frontman Jeremy Stith. "I have been a fan of Mario Escoto's bands and film work for awhile and when it came around to the promotion of Failed Entertainment, he was the first person I thought of to direct a video for us. Mario is currently in film school and the timing worked out perfectly to where he would be able to make a video for us that would also count as his project for the semester. The video was filmed on 16mm Kodak Double X Black and White film and shot in Orlando, Florida in March 2019."

Stith continues, "Mario and I discussed the ideas behind the record and specifically the song 'Angels Over Berlin' for awhile before talking about what we wanted to accomplish with the video and how he would do it. We talked about people like Agnes Varda, Yasujirō Ozu, Allison Anders, Wim Wenders and Jim Jarmusch along with the 80's No Wave Cinema movement in NYC. We talked about films like Metropolis and Subway Riders, Border Radio and Night of the Hunter, as well as music videos like REM's "Man on the Moon" and all those old Sub Pop Network Program VHS videos.

Exploring the ever-familiar and ubiquitous realm of loneliness and self-exploration, Mario came up with a story about a guy on a journey for a trumpet and the eclectic characters he meets on the way, The Angel, The Salesman and The Sleazeball. With the help of cinematographer Nicholas Inman and a brilliant crew, he was able to bring these characters to life.

It reminds me of a world where Jim Jarmusch got to direct an episode of The Adventures of Pete & Pete in his signature black and white."
