Ahead of their upcoming run of dates alongside returning tour dates Mastodon, upstate New York progressive rockers Coheed and Cambria have released a video for their single "True Ugly," taken from the group most recent effort The Unheavenly Creatures.
Donning various plastic animal masks (a giraffe, pig, cow, and zebra make appearances) for surreal, somewhat foreboding shots in stairwells and theaters, the band members seem to stalk around in an unconnected and ominous sepia-toned setting while brightly lit performance footage from their recent tour flashes in and out. Sprinkled throughout are moments of enthusiastic fans being filmed in front of a wall while talking to someone off-camera directing their movements.
The simple but effective layout of the video stands in contrast to the elaborate productions made from their previous singles from the record, including the bank robbers and highly choreographed moves seen in "Old Flames." The masks seem to tie in the theme of The Amory Wars, singer Claudio Sanchez's graphic novel series and the conceptual theme the run's throughout the band's discography.
