Celtic Frost's Tom G. Warrior Slams Metallica for "Humiliating" Covers

"They've long lost the ability to play true metal in my opinion"

Celtic Frost, Hellhammer, Triptykon and Triumph of Death frontman Tom G. Warrior dives deep into his history and resurgence in a lengthy new interview with Rolling Stone, and the ever-outspoken extreme-metal pioneer pulled no punches when it came to heavy music's biggest band, Metallica. Over the last couple years, the thrash OGs' Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo have covered two Celtic Frost songs, "Usurper" and "Procreation of the Wicked," live onstage as part of their ongoing "doodles" series. Warrior noticed, and he was the opposite of flattered or impressed.

"They butchered it, and it was humiliating," he told Rolling Stone. "Why don't they leave their millionaire fingers off it? They've long lost the ability to play true metal in my opinion. Maybe I should go onstage and do a really miserable version of [Metallica's] 'Hit The Lights' with, like, 200 mistakes to set the balance."

But it wasn't just Metallica's poor renditions of his compositions that set Warrior off. He had special words for the band's frontman and noted big-game hunter James Hetfield. "This is completely personal, and I know probably the majority of your readers will not share this feeling, but even if they had done a fantastic job, I could puke all over it because I don't support people who go hunting bears for a hobby," Warrior said. "I cannot respect a person like that, even if it's a genius musician."
