Chester Bennington's First Band: Hear Grey Daze's Timely Song "Sometimes"

Late, great singer penned resonate lyrics about life's ups and downs

"Sometimes, things just seem to fall apart, when you least expect them to," a 21-year-old Chester Bennington intones on "Sometimes," the latest cut to be released by his re-formed, pre–Link Park band Grey Daze. "Maybe things will look better," he goes on to sing, "maybe things will look brighter." The song dates back to 1994, but was recently reworked for Amends, the group's forthcoming new 11-cut album featuring re-recorded music with remastered vocals from the band's long out-of-print catalog. Originally slated to drop on April 10th, Amends was rescheduled for a June 26th release date due to the rapidly shifting situation with the COVID-19 pandemic — it's available for pre-order now.

"Chester was already a masterful lyricist at the age of 18, when he wrote this song," Grey Daze co-founder and drummer Sean Dowdell commented of "Sometimes," which first recorded three years later. "I've said this in prior interviews but this is one of those songs that when I hear it now, I recognize the pain Chester was living with even more acutely now that I'm an adult. As so many of Chester's lyrics do, this message in this song, that bad things happen and that things will get better, resonates in an entirely different way with the current crisis we are all living through, and brings a message of hope."
