Crash Course: Meet Nova Twins, Fever 333-Endorsed Champions of "Uniqueness"

"It's harder for non-males in rock music so we want to help break the mold"
nova twins PRESS 2019 2

There are so many bands out there doing so many interesting things, it's hard to know where to turn. That's why we've created Crash Course, a recurring feature offering a concise introduction to a band or artist that we think slays, covering their origins, process and vision. Our latest subject is Nova Twins, a U.K.-based, hip-hop-infused punk-rock duo signed to the Fever 333 frontman Jason Aalon Butler's label 333 Wreckords Crew. They just dropped their brash, quirky debut full-length, Who Are the Girls? We caught up with the group's Georgia South and Amy Love to find what exactly Nova Twins stand for and get some insight into what makes them tick.

WHO IS NOVA TWINS? CAN YOU GIVE US A BRIEF HISTORY ON HOW YOU CAME TOGETHER?
GEORGIA SOUTH
We became super close growing up — we are like sisters! We both did music, but in separate projects but one day we decided to try song writing together and had so much fun, we never looked back!

AMY LOVE Yea, that song was called "Bad Bitches"! We were so excited that we locked ourselves away for a year and didn't leave the house until we were ready to gig with a full set of new songs!

IF YOU HAD TO DESCRIBE YOUR BAND'S MISSION STATEMENT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
SOUTH
To push the movement of diversity in heavy music forward by being another face people can look to. We didn't have many faces to look up to when we were growing up, so we want to change that and encourage people to be proud of their uniqueness.

LOVE We are here to represent the unrepresented and to encourage inclusivity. It's harder for non-males in rock music so we want to help break the mold.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO HEAVY ROCK MUSIC?
LOVE I got into glam rock and punk when I left school and went to college at 16. My family didn't listen to it, but when a few friends played me some cool records, I just resonated with the live raucous attitude of it all. It made me want to deliver the same sort of energy in my own music.

SOUTH I discovered so many bands by doing shows! My heavy-rock knowledge was pretty limited, as I grew up on a more hip-hop background, so playing shows at festivals and watching bands live opened me up to a whole new world.

BEING IN A BAND, WHAT'S THE HARDEST CHALLENGE YOU HAVE COME ACROSS SO FAR?
SOUTH
I think we've just discovered it! We're quarantined in two different houses because of the corona crisis, so it has been challenging trying to write and get things done quickly, as we're usually together all the time! [Laughs]

LOVE Yes, that! It's been so hard having to reschedule all of our tours and festivals. This was set to be our favorite year and now it's moved to 2021. All of our fellow artists are feeling the burn, too — sad times!

WHAT'S YOUR USUAL PRESHOW RITUAL?
LOVE
We play loads of our friend's music really loud on a speaker and get pumped before every show. We run around like crazy and stretch — if we don't, we often come off stage with whiplash!

SOUTH We always, without fail, jump up and down in a circle holding hands and do a secret handshake right before we walk on stage.

WHAT'S THE CRAZIEST THING THAT'S EVER HAPPENED AT ONE OF YOUR SHOWS?
LOVE
Once we set up for a festival abroad and the sun was so hot it melted our pedals and cables! It was all a bit of a panic, but luckily we had spares and had found tin foil heat protectors to cover our gear!

SOUTH We played to 22,000 people at Hell Fest last year and the crowd opened up and was running in the biggest circle pit I've ever seen — it was mad.

DO YOU HAVE HOBBIES OR PETS?
SOUTH
My hobby is customizing clothes — it's the second thing on my mind other than music. I have a fat fluffy cat called Reason. My dad didn't want a cat, so as a compromise we let him name him after his favorite music software at the time: Reason.

LOVE Love taking time to recycle/make new clothes for our Bad Stitches collection. I also love painting but never get the time to. I love animals and would love to have a cat, although Georgia's cat is dangerous and wild!

WHAT BAND OR MUSICAL ARTIST ARE YOU A BIGGEST FAN OF?
LOVE
I don't really have a main favorite. We play and go to so many shows I've got a million different band tees. They make the best day-to-day wear!

SOUTH I haven't fallen that hard for a band to get a tattoo, but N.E.R.D. probably came the closest. I listened to them nonstop when I was growing up!

IF YOU COULD ONLY PLAY ONE OF YOUR SONGS FOR SOMEONE TO INTRODUCE THEM TO YOUR BAND, WHAT SONG WOULD IT BE?
SOUTH
"Taxi" because it has a fat riff and a killer, actioned-packed Matrix/Blade Runner-inspired video to go with it. Check it out!

LOVE Yes, I would agree with "Taxi." It's a lot of fun to play!
