After years of contention around naming rights, in early 2019 Cro-Mags founder Harley Flanagan and former bandmates John Joseph and Mackie Jayson reached an agreement and Flanagan will retain exclusive rights to the band's name. (Joseph and Mackie will be touring as Cro-Mags "JM.")
With that settled, today, June 28th, the Flanagan-led Cro-Mags have announced a new EP on Victory Records — their first new music in 19 years — Don't Give In, which includes three blazing songs: the title-track, "Drag You Under" and "No One's Victim."
Flanagan, the primary songwriter and only member to be featured on each of the influential New York hardcore band's five albums, tells Revolver of the new material, "I had a lot of inspiration writing these songs; I experienced a lot of loss — the loss of friends, by suicide, cancer, depression, mortality and ultimately the beauty of life; and the need to fight for it, for every breathe."
Despite those struggles, Flanagan's attitude remains one of hope and healing. "We all fight our battles, and they are different," he continues, "but none of us are unique in the fact that we have to fight, and often alone. In that way we all have something in common. I feel like I crashed and burned enough times and managed to rise back up. But that is life; you have to fight for what you want, and you also have to know how temporary it all is."
Next up for the band — which also includes guitarists Gabby Abularach, Rocky George (Suicidal Tendencies, Fishbone) and drummer Garry "G-Man" Sullivan — are four dates stretched across the summer opening for the massive Misfits before they head overseas for some solo dates. Find details below.
The Cro-Mags will be issuing a limited-edition 7-inch pressing of Don't Give In on August 2nd in four different variants: glow in the dark, black and blue mix, solid orange and clear. Preorders are happening now at this location.
