The latest single from Cult Leader's forthcoming LP A Patient Man is "To: Achlys," and it's a surprising one. The band — known for discordant, chaotic, hateful hardcore — has taken a left turn toward pitch-black goth draped in a gauzy shroud of moody post-rock. It's beautiful and sad, and considering the group's track record for overwhelming darkness and wide-ranging experimentation, it isn't really as major a stretch for these boys as it might initially sound, at least not philosophically. "To: Achlys" is an extremely impressive showing from the SLC crew, one heightened by the cut's incredible video, an eerie death-rock ritual cast in high-contrast black and white. "Achlys is the personification of sorrow, a primordial Goddess who has been on my mind since before Lightless Walk was released," says Cult Leader vocalist Anthony Lucero, referencing his band's 2015 debut LP. "This song addresses her directly and it allows us to explore what it means to play 'heavy music.' The video is simply something I felt the need to make. It's a further expression of the visual side of our band."
