Dave Grohl Reveals He Almost Joined GWAR as a Teenager

Rock icon considered drumming for masked metal freaks before joining Nirvana
Gwar Grohl split

In our present reality, we know Dave Grohl as the former drummer of Nirvana, the frontman of the Foo Fighters and one of rock music's friendliest and most universally beloved figures. However, there's an alternate reality in which the two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame never joined the grunge icons because he was drumming in the interplanetary metal freaks GWAR.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Grohl revealed that when he was a teenage musician still living in D.C., there was a period of time in which he highly considered becoming GWAR's new drummer.

"GWAR were looking for a drummer, and I talked to their guitar player Dewey about it," Grohl recalled. "And he's, like, 'It's great, and you get to design your own costume.' As drummer, you don't want something that covers your face fully. You want your arms to be free."

"So I was, like, 'Cool' So I started kind of drawing this thing," he continued. "At the time GWAR was a band that would draw like 700 people, right? Which is huge."

This was shortly after Groh's previous band, Scream, had suddenly disbanded, so the prospect of joining a band like GWAR who already had a considerable audience was tempting. However, the now-52-year-old said that after taking more time to consider the consequences of performing in a band as crass as GWAR, he ultimately backed out of the offer.

"The more I thought about it, am I really gonna invite my uncle to see me play when there's like fake blood and cum shooting all over the place?," Grohl said.

Most rock fans would likely agree that Grohl made the right choice, but we'd kill to see a one-off performance with Grohl banging away to songs like "The Salamanizer" and "Sexecutioner." It's never too late!
