Drummer extraordinaire Dave Lombardo is known for his unmatched percussive chops, having laid down the backbeat for such revered bands as Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies, Misfits and Mr. Bungle, but he's now turned his attention to film scoring, providing the music for a new documentary titled Los Últimos Frikis, which tells the story of pioneering Cuban heavy-metal band Zeus.
With the Nicholas Brennen–directed movie making its world debut on November 10th at Doc NYC, a trailer is now available in which you can hear both the band's music and the drummer's original compositions. Zeus formed under an oppressive regime in which music like theirs was taboo, but they forged on nonetheless and are celebrating their 30th anniversary and gearing up for a tour to commemorate the milestone. Lombardo has a personal connection to the subject, being of Cuban-American descent and having been born in Cuba before leaving when he was just 14 months old. He returned for the first time, 50 years later, in 2018.
"I have always wanted to score a film," Lombardo said of the project. "It's been a goal of mine for many years now. When Nick told me his vision for this documentary, I was immediately intrigued by the story because it could have been mine. When he asked me to score the film, I didn't hesitate to accept. It couldn't have been a more perfect match for my debut at a new form of musical expression. I have been on a path of making music solely for myself and various bands for 37 years. This is for the people of my birthplace. This is for my blood and for healing."
