Synth-rock heroes broke out hits, rarities and new songs

Depeche Mode kicked off their 2023 world tour last night (March 23rd) at the Golden 1 Center arena in Sacramento, California, in front of a rapturous crowd. The revered synth-rock duo — comprised of just Dave Gahan and Martin Gore since the 2022 death of keyboardist Andy "Fletch" Fletcher — powered through a massive, 23-song set including four cuts off their new album, Memento Mori: "My Cosmos Is Mine," "Speak to Me," "Soul With Me" and lead single "Ghosts Again."

Depeche Mode also paid tribute to Fletch, dedicating their performance of the Eighties classic "World in My Eyes" to him as black-and-white images of the late, great musician were broadcasted on the big screens.

Aside from new songs and fan-favorite hits, the band also dusted off some rarities including "Sister of Night" (non-acoustic version), "A Question of Lust" (full band, with Gore on vocals) and "Waiting for the Night" (with Gore and Gahan on vocals), the last of which hadn't been played since 2009.
