Fan Poll: Top 5 Theories About Slipknot's New Mystery Member

See who you think is the 'Knot's Cenobite-ian second percussionist
slipknot new member

Last week, the world went into full Slipknot hysteria when the band released a brand new single, "Unsainted," and announced the details of their upcoming album We Are Not Your Kind. As with any new Slipknot album, numerous questions arose, but the one that most captivated Maggots everywhere was, who is the band's new second percussionist? Earlier this year, the 'Knot split with longtime member Chris Fehn, leaving a spot behind the kegs open. We pondered a few possibilities ourselves, but wanted to open the question up to our readers — because fan theories are the best. While Jesus Christ, "a clone of Corey Taylor" and, of course, "Your Mom" did not get quite enough votes to make the list, the top vote-getters are a diverse bunch that range from plausible to pipe dreams. See who you think is behind the mask.

5. Mike Portnoy

Mike Portnoy has been in somewhere around a thousand bands already — Dream Theater, Avenged Sevenfold, Adrenaline Mob, Flying Colors, the Winery Dogs, Sons of Apollo, et al — and the master drummer certainly has a good enough sense of rhythm to do a fine job banging a keg, so it's perhaps no surprise that many fans theorized that he might be the Nine's newest member. Dude does have a notably full head of long hair, which might be hard to stuff into that Cenobite mask, but all bets are off when it comes to the 'Knot.

4. Dave Grohl

While no one should be shocked to see Dave Grohl pop up in almost any situation, it's highly unlikely the former Nirvana drummer has time for the Foo Fighters, a new BBQ business, an endless stream of charitable acts, guest appearances with goddamn everyone AND a recurring role as Slipknot's second percussionist. That said, we still wouldn't put it past him.

3. Joey Jordison

Can you imagine? Sure, some Maggots probably slipped Jordison's name into our fan poll jokingly, but it might be the most Slipknot thing ever to bring someone of Joey's prominence back into the fold by throwing a new mask on them and not telling anybody. Jordison is clearly a percussionist par excellence and a fan favorite, so why not?

2. Griffin Taylor

Corey Taylor's son Griffin has shown off his own musical talents onstage with his dad before, so this option shouldn't be completely ruled out. He's still a bit young to be out on the road with the seasoned vets of Slipknot, though, so as cool as it would be, it seems unlikely that it's him.

1. One of Shawn "Clown" Crahan's Sons

It's no surprise that Clown's sons got the most votes in this poll: This theory has been gaining steam. Shawn "Clown" Crahan has expressed a few times that he'd love for his son Gage to take over Slipknot once he's decided to retire from the band. Both Gage and his younger brother, Simon, are percussionists in their own right, the latter with a YouTube channel where he uploads videos of drum covers. So it would make a lot of sense for one of them to join the fold. Only time will tell, of course — keep up the detective work.
