If you like your stoner metal with a little extra something, then Somnuri are for you. The Brooklyn trio are gearing up to release their sophomore record, Nefarious Wave, next month on Blues Funeral Recordings, and today we're premiering a mountainous new single from it called "Desire Lines."
The first two-thirds of the track take the listener on a journey through doomy peaks and valleys with an emphasis on reverb-soaked vocals, streaky guitar leads and some avalanche-inducing low-end. However, the rear of the song suddenly takes a satisfying nosedive into a noisy, down-tuned chugging pattern that sounds more like Meshuggah than your average sludge group usually does.
"'Desire Lines' has to do with the idea that if you always seek the path of least resistance, you may end up feeling like life has passed you by," the band tells us. "It's about not having regrets."
The song's mind-fuck-of-a-video, which was animated and directed by Dima Drjuchin, is the perfect visual accompaniment for its sudden emotional switch-ups. "It feels warm and inviting at first, but something is looming and it ultimately goes to a much darker place," Somnuri say. "It certainly takes the viewer on a ride, and fans of heavy, psychedelic music and art should dig it."
