Heavy metal has many great anti-war anthems, with Black Sabbath's 1970 protest song "War Pigs" setting both the template and the standard. Its biting lyrics were penned by bassist Geezer Butler, who recently expressed dismay over the fact that his words "remain relevant" over 50 years later, especially in light of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Geezer shared his thoughts on Twitter while praising a newly released cover version of "War Pigs" by the unhappy clown Puddles Pity Party. "Great rendition," the Sabbath bass player wrote. "Sad that my lyrics remain relevant. - maybe megalomaniacs like Putin should have another listen."

Butler wrote the lyrics to "War Pigs" in protest to the Vietnam War. "Britain was on the verge of being brought into [the war]," he told Mojo in 2017, as quoted by Blabbermouth. "There was protests in the street, all kinds of anti-Vietnam things going on.

"War is the real Satanism. Politicians are the real Satanists. That's what I was trying to say."
