Hear Alt-Rock Icons L7's Fiery New Song "Burn Baby" From First Album in 20 Years

Reunited band details signing to Joan Jett's label for forthcoming 'Scatter the Rats,' shares lead single's colorful music video

For all those left teased and wanting more when sludgy grunge legends L7 dropped new singles in 2017 and 2018, today's announcement of the group's first new album in 20 years, Scatter the Rats, should come as a welcome balm. To whet fans' appetites even more, the quartet released the record's lead single "Burn Baby" along with a video that shows the seasoned rockers at their most confident, fun, and pissed off as ever.

The colorful clip shows the no-fucks attitudes and fun-loving antics that have gained L7 fans since the very beginning of their self-determined career. A performance obscured slightly by incendiary overlays shows the four rocking out and goofing off, while layered editing techniques build texture and intrigue to the scene. Laid back but ferocious nonetheless, the track's uptempo, catchy structure underlies its message of unity in the face of a bigger evil; the lyrics tell a story of two opposing parties who hate one another for ideological differences but in the grand scheme of oppression, they'd both be burned at the stake.

While unsure of how they would proceed with putting out new material, L7 have been planning carefully for quite some time on how to make a new album a reality. Front woman Donita Sparks told Revolver last year, "We will either put [the album] out ourselves, or partner up with a label who's got some fabulous distribution. We're unclear about that aspect at this time."

Since then, they've signed to Blackheart Records for this new LP, run by the one and only Joan Jett herself who said, "I've been friends with L7 for years and am very excited and proud to have the opportunity to release their new album." Sparks, who calls Jett "a good friend," commented on the pairing, "So great to stomp into Blackheart Records with her at the helm. We're very excited to work with Joan and the entire Blackheart family."

"Burn Baby" will be released in physical format as a special Record Store Day 7" with the B-side "Fighting the Crave" on Saturday, April 13th. The full album Scatter the Rats follows on May 3rd right before the band kick off a string of seven dates along with Rancid, Suicidal Tendencies, and more.
