Hear Architects' Cathartic New Song "Hereafter"

U.K. metalcore crew announces first album since death of founding guitarist Tom Searle

In 2016, U.K. metalcore crew Architects suffered a huge loss when guitarist and songwriter Tom Searle died after a three year battle with skin cancer. With the band mourning the loss of the founding member, it was unknown where they were heading, until the release of the single "Doomsday" last year, along with a statement making it clear that they aren't going anywhere. And now, the band is set to release their eighth album Holy Hell — which is due November 9th via Epitaph Records and available for pre-order here — and are giving everyone a taste of what's in store.

The band hasn't lost a step judging from new single "Hereafter," which is clearly a cathartic release for the group, with singer Sam Carter immediately launching into some of his most furious vocals to date. Instrumentally, the song features a satisfyingly down-tuned chug, adding flourishes of technical playing amid all the heaviness. The fury is in a constantly forward-moving motion, hitting a well-deserved breakdown at the end as everything hits a fever pitch, Carter yelling out, "I was embraced by the fallout."

"In those first months after Tom's death, I didn't deal with it at all and I felt so unhappy and anxious," says Dan Searle, Tom's twin brother and Architect's drummer. "I'd ignored it and just tried to cope. But I knew that at some point, I had to learn from it."

"It's at times like that you ask yourself, 'What is left?'" Carter adds. "As a group of friends, we had to find something."

"Ultimately, there were two choices," Dan says. "Feel sorry for yourself and believe the world to be a horrible place and let it defeat you. Or let it inspire us to live the life that Tom would have wanted us to live. I was very worried about people taking away a despondent message from the album. I felt a level of responsibility to provide a light at the end of the tunnel for people who are going through terrible experiences."
