W, the new album from prolific Japanese experimentalists Boris, is due on January 21st via Sacred Bones Records, and it offers yet another twist on the band's ever-twisting sound. It's the follow-up and conceptual companion piece to 2020's aggressive, punky No LP — the trio has pointed out that No and W "weave together to form NOW, a duo of releases that respond to one another" — and it finds Boris's Wata carrying the lead vocal duties, as heard on first single "Drowning By Numbers."
Second single "Beyond Good and Evil," released today (January 17th), taps into her personal history, specifically the fact that Wata is from Hiroshima, the Japanese city largely destroyed by an atomic bomb during World War II. The song wrangles with that legacy.
The band commented in a joint statement, "There is a vast magnitude in a huge mushroom cloud and in decaying ruins. We feel both the sadness and beauty of these things at the same time; that is who we are. This video was made from the perspective of a mushroom cloud."
