"2020 is year of the guttural," Bring Me the Horizon frontman Oli Sykes proclaimed in one of the Sheffield, U.K., shape-shifters' recent behind-the-scenes videos. To that end, the band's latest single, "Obey," featuring pop/hip-hop artist and fellow Brit Yungblud, is the full-on monster breakdown special that old-school BMTH fans have been waiting for since '06. Sykes described the tune to BBC Radio 1, which premiered the single, as a "banger," and one of the fastest Bring Me songs to come together, taking just about two days. Yungblud added he was in Los Angeles at the time he received part of the composition, watching and supporting the Black Lives Matter protests. Thematically, the single reflects those demonstrations and the troubled times we live in. "Obey/You don't want us to come out and play ...," go the lyrics. "When you feed them it's lethal/Tell me how you're going to hurt yourself/You call yourselves peaceful/You monsters are people."
Sykes said, "We consider ourselves free, but only because the chains are invisible, and we are controlled in ways we don't even want to think about. They tell us how to live with a smile on their face, like shit ain't fucked up, inform us of tragic statistics like it's nothing… it's a weird world."
"We are being told to conform to a completely outdated idea that we don't relate to or even understand," adds Yungblud. "They teach us to turn against each other and to fight against our differences rather than embrace and celebrate them. They try to keep us divided because it makes us weaker. Robots follow robots, because they feel nothing at all. But what they don't realize is that to us, to be different is to be free, and a world of fucking love and equality is a world we want to be part of. We will rise above the hate and the diversion. We will fight for the world we want to be a part of. We will not obey."
