Post–black-metal act releases lush tribute to honor 25th anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death

Fresh off the March release of their latest album, A Grief Observed, today (April 5th) Chicago post/black-metal outfit Chrome Waves have dropped a lush, haunting rendition of Nirvana's "Something in the Way" in honor of the 25th anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death.

Grimly serene with echoing layers of sparse guitar and distorted vocals, the band took the stark melancholy of the original, layered in more ornate orchestral string accompaniment, and spun gossamer threads of rich, stirring reverb throughout its expansive aural tapestry. A gorgeous tribute to a figure profoundly influential on the band, especially guitarist Jeff Wilson, the track is a wistful tearjerker that evokes the memory of Cobain's unmatched and lasting effect on the landscape of rock music.

Wilson told Metal Injection the band chose this specific track because it was a "final statement on Nevermind and it felt natural that this would be the song we would choose to cover by the band ... I hope we've done the band justice in commemorating their musical contributions, for they were the reason I initially picked up a guitar and I wouldn't be writing this without them."
