Hear Coilguns Rage Like Neurosis and Unsane on New Love Song "Manicheans"

Guitarist Jona Nido: Love "can turn any benevolent and polite human being into a narrow-minded, selfish animal"

Read any interview by Neurosis that dives into their influences and Unsane (R.I.P.) will probably to show up at some point. It makes sense — the pair grew up in each other's orbit and deviated from a trail originally blazed by Swans. So what if a band was to play in the middle ground between the two, maybe add more of a hardcore punk feel to it all? Then you'd have the mighty Coilguns.

"Manicheans" is the latest single from the Swiss juggernaut, a 10-ton steamroller of riffs that comes off like Neurosis without any of the psychedelia or ambient meander — just unadulterated fury. The song is culled from the band's Watchwinders release, due on October 25th.

When asked about "Manicheans," guitarist Jona Nido's answer is nothing short of surprising: "This is a love song," he reveals. "We don't precisely refer here to an ancient Persian religion, but to a more generic conception of a world that's made of good and evil. Such a typical heavy metal theme ... but let's leave metal and religion aside. This one is about love. Inclusive love, that embraces all types of attraction and empathy, that can turn any benevolent and polite human being into a narrow-minded, selfish animal. This is us, ugly and beautiful. Everything we claim and reject. We wrote this song together, in a very horizontal and collective process. The main riff is a Frankenstein creature of mine and vocalist Louis Jucker ideas, and the bridge synth part is a good example of what Donatien Théivent [synth, vocals] has brought to the band, surfing over [drummer] Luc's crawling beat."

Order your copy of Watchwinders via Hummus Records, and E.U. folks can catch them at the dates below.
