Drummer-composer Dan Weiss' 2018 album Starebaby introduced listeners to a dark, experimental, genre-busting new band, also called Starebaby, that includes among its ranks bassist extraordinaire Trevor Dunn, of Mr. Bungle, Fantômas, Melvins and Secret Chiefs 3 fame. On September 18th, the group — which is unified by a shared love of heavy metal and rounded out by guitarist Ben Monder and the twin-keyboard/piano/electronics attack of Matt Mitchell and Craig Taborn — is set to drop its follow-up, Natural Selection. The LP is available for preorders now via Pi Recordings and Bandcamp, and today (September 10th), Dan Weiss Starebaby have teamed with Revolver to premiere standout cut "Dawn," a creepy, cinematic composition that would fit right in on the Twin Peaks soundtrack. "'Dawn' is a melodic, atmospheric piece that isn't really like any other song in the Starebaby songbook in that it's pretty bare-boned in nature," Weiss tells us. "I can hear the influence of Eighties bands such as Blue Nile and Cocteau Twins, plus the impact that John Cage and Morton Feldman's approach to melody have had on me. Craig and Matt play piano simultaneously, which is unusual, but the thing that most strikes me about the track is Ben's use of effects: They feel cinematic and, for me, are evocative of the films of Terrence Malick for some reason."
