Hear Deafheaven's Heavy-as-Hell Surprise New Song "Black Brick"

'Ordinary Corrupt Human Love' B-side is band's most crushing offering yet

Deafheaven's latest full-length, Ordinary Corrupt Human Love, was one of the best albums of 2018, a gorgeous, free-wheeling act of spirited ambition that saw the polarizing band embracing non-metallic influences — from Brit-pop and shoegaze to classic rock and beyond — and embodying the seemingly contradictory idea of optimistic black metal without inhibition. Which makes the group's new surprise song "Black Brick" all the more shocking: Not only has the single dropped seemingly out of the blue, but it's also Deafheaven's heaviest offering yet, a fully necro blast of sepulchral grimness. The seven-and-a-half-minute cut is a B-side from Ordinary Corrupt Human Love, and one can only wonder how different the album would have felt as a whole with its inclusion. "The furnace of gentle dreams/A caustic womb/Champagne light/After/The sacred deep blue majesty of dawn," snarls frontman George Clarke over roiling riffage.

"Black Brick" comes ahead of the band's imminent co-headlining tour with Baroness; Zeal & Ardor are set to open. After that trek wraps in April, Deafheaven will take a short break before hitting the road again with Gojira, a run that includes stops at Bonnaroo and Psycho Las Vegas.
