From the starting line "Darkness Infests" impresses with its new approach to what can be an uber-tired genre of classic death metal. The new track from snarling Delaware crew Scorched starts with a chugging riff at half speed before going double-time and eventually into a more traditional death-metal gallop.
Once the riffs actually kick in to that classic death-metal d-beat, traditionalism is thrown out the window — chord progressions have more in common with hardcore or a number of other heavy genres, making their take on death metal much more fascinating than most. With Scorched, nothing is ever truly a pitch down the middle, and it's these left turns and unexpected ideas that truly elevate this band from run of the mill to must hear.
"Darkness Infests" is culled from Scorched's forthcoming LP Ecliptic Butchery, due on 10/28 via 20 Buck Spin. Order yours.
