Hear the Devil Wears Prada's Uplifting Cover of Julien Baker's "Sour Breath"

TDWP rework Christian singer's song with rousing post-metal approach

In her formative years, Christian singer-songwriter Julien Baker covered the songs of the Devil Wears Prada, and earlier this year she and the band began interacting on Twitter, with Baker revealing she owned the first shirt they ever made. The mutual respect continues with TDWP's just-released cover of Baker's song "Sour Breath."

In their take on the jam, they've added a thick layer of electronics to the intro, and singer Jeremy DePoyster gives some of his best vocals to date, before handing things off to Mike Hranica to deliver his combination shouted/spoken take. The music then takes an upswing, hitting a kind of post-metal ascension that builds off of the original's melody, transforming it into a cathartic song that lives on its own.

"We were most flattered when Julien mentioned covering our songs way back when," singer Mike Hranica said. "With that, we thought it would be interesting to cover one of hers. I suppose it sort of explains itself."
