Dream Theater have kept fans busy this year. Back in the spring, the prog-metal titans opened up their archives and began properly reissuing live albums, rarities, bootlegs and more on high-quality vinyl. Four of them have been announced and/or released in 2021 alone, and as if that wasn't enough, now there's a brand new Dream Theater full-length on the way as well.
Technically announced earlier this summer, A View from the Top of the World is the prolific group's 15th studio album overall and their first since 2019's Distance Over Time. The seven-track, seventy-minute opus is out in full on October 22nd, but today they've dropped a dizzying lead single called "The Alien."
The album marks the first to be recorded at their Dream Theater Headquarters studio in New York City, and if "The Alien" is any indication, then the band clearly feel comfortable and creatively inspired in their new environment.
The nine-minute epic is classic Dream Theater — multiple movements, wonky tempo changes and of course a mind-melting solo from John Petrucci.Take a listen above while you trip out to its extraterrestrial visualizer.
