Fans of old-school metalcore should have Serration on their radar. The Alberta, Canada, band initially caught our ear for their 2018 split with Portland rising stars Dying Wish, who were then just a local band playing brutally emotional metalcore in the same vein as their split-mates. Dying Wish have come a long way since then, and now it's Serration's turn to step up to the plate.
After dropping a two-song promo last year on DAZE Records, the band are announcing their upcoming debut LP, Simulations of Hell, and today we're stoked to be premiering its lead single, "A Suicide Note in Midi Format" — featuring none other than Dying Wish frontperson Emma Boster.
The song is a wickedly heavy slice of metalcore that leans into the tangled stylings of bands like Botch and Zao, while still providing the heart-on-sleeve catchiness of a group like Poison the Well. Serration frontman Cody Dewald goes head-to-head with Boster, who offers serene clean vocals in between the unclean shrieks. Check it out above via YouTube.
"The was written to sound and feel like the extreme highs and lows of existing with manic depression and extreme grief," the band say. "Familiar feelings for a lot of people. Lyrically, Cody and Emma to convey the same energy; the familiarity with drowning in your own mind, but still waking up and getting through each day regardless of your internal struggles."
