Hear Evanescence's New Guitar-Driven Anthem "The Game Is Over"

Amy Lee: "This song is about being sick of the facade"

Back in April, Evanescence announced their first album of new original music in nine years, The Bitter Truth, and unveiled its lead single, "Wasted on You," along with the song's DIY, quarantine-filmed music video. The band — led by singer-songwriter-pianist Amy Lee — also revealed their plan to release the LP "one piece at a time" across 2020. Today (July 1st), the group offered up another piece, a second single, "The Game Is Over," a more guitar-driven and anthemic answer to its predecessor's piano-laced balladry. Stream it above via YouTube. The song will be followed on Friday by another iPhone-shot video, this one an effects-laden "neon-nightmare," according to the band. The P.R. Brown-directed clip will debut on July 3rd at 12 p.m. ET/9 a.m. PT during a live YouTube premiere featuring a fan Q&A with Lee.

"This song is about being sick of the facade," she commented of "The Game Is Over." "The disguises we wear for others to make them feel comfortable, the inside feelings being so different than what we show on the outside to fit within the boundaries of what's socially acceptable, or what's not going to make you unpleasant or too 'weird' to be around.

"'The Game Is Over' is a promise to myself and out loud that I'm going to be more of my real, inner self on the outside — not lock her up because she can't be contained anymore. It's also a prayer to become better, to not feel so messed up, locked up, and hurt inside."
