Between his tenure as a touring guitarist in Nine Inch Nails from '89 to '93, and his early work with Filter, particularly 1995's Short Bus and its explosive single "Hey Man Nice Shot," Richard Patrick's industrial-music bona fides are beyond repute. (Does having a brother who's the T-1000 in Terminator 2 count, as well? We think so.) In 2018, Patrick revealed that he'd reunited with his Short Bus collaborator Brian Liesegang and they announced plans to write and record a sequel, titled ReBus, to that milestone album. Following the collapse of crowdfunding platform PledgeMusic, those plans fell apart, but Filter have returned today (June 18th) nonetheless with a decidedly heavy, throwback industrial-metal new song, "Thoughts and Prayers." "America is spinning out of control. It's never been more sick, unemployed and especially divided. I love my country so much that I'm willing to part with some fans that might not like my message to her," Patrick told Loudwire of the song. "'Thoughts and Prayers' has become a meaningless catchphrase that gets thrown out every time something bad happens. Usually a mass murder, etc. It's an empty gesture. It's time for more than thoughts and prayers. It's time to wake the fuck up and start listening to each other."
